Rhône in the NW POSTPONED

posted Aug 23, 2011 2:03 PM by Ryan Reichert

Hi all - sorry for the last minute cancellation, but we're going to postpone this tasting. We'll need at least 10 people to join us, so when the next invite goes out please be sure to RSVP early. Thanks!

Rhône in the Northwest - Aug 25th

posted Jul 30, 2011 5:27 PM by Ryan Reichert

Greetings Centurians!

Our August tasting has officially been scheduled for Thursday, 8/25 at the Hop & Vine. Alex has put together an excellent selection for us focusing on single Rhône varietals from the Pacific Northwest. This will be a fun comparison since many of these are typically blended to make wines in France's Rhône region.

Here are the wines:
  • 2010 Syncline Viognier
  • 2009 Maison Bleu 'Petite Joie' Marsanne
  • 2009 Ransom Cellars Grenache
  • 2009 Syncline Mourvedre
  • 2008 Gramercy Cellars 'Lagniappe' Syrah
The tasting will include all wines + nosh, and will be $20. We'll get started between 6:00 and 6:30, and we hope to see you there. Hopefully it'll be a nice evening to sit out in the courtyard.

Additionally, as I head back to school to get my MBA, I'm going to be stepping away from the management of this group. The Alex and Yetta at the Hop & Vine however are happy to keep things running in my leave. So while I'm leaning Mandarin and calculating Yuan conversions, they will be posting updates and hosting the group. We are also going to suspend passport stickers for the time being (sorry ... I know the stickers were the only reason so many of you attended!) but you can still keep your notes in one place with the passport.

Cheers!

Ryan

Bubbles for Bastille Day

posted Jul 12, 2011 12:09 PM by Ryan Reichert

Hi all,

As a reminder, our next tasting at the Hop & Vine is this Thursday, which is also Bastille Day.

We'll be celebrating in style with a line up of French sparkling wines:

NV Martinolles Blanquette de Limoux Le Berceau
NV Archard-Vincent Clairette de Die Brut
2007 Pas St Martin Saumur Brut
NV Michel Brut Pinot Meunier
2005 Triolet Brut Vieilles Vignes

The tasting will be $20 per person (including wines and nibbles). Since we're only going to have Century Club once a month through the summer, we'll have better wines at a slightly higher cost.

Hope to see you all there Thursday between 6-8pm. Bring your passports and guests.

Cheers!

Schedule Changes & Next Meeting

posted Jun 2, 2011 10:06 PM by Ryan Reichert

Greetings!

Thanks to all who attended the rescheduled June 2 Piedmont tasting. We had a fun evening, and tasted some really marvelous wines. Kudos to Alex for finding such good bottles.

At tonight's meeting, we voted to change the format of our group's scheduled tastings. We'll now be having a tasting once a month on the Second Thursday of the month. We are also going to increase the quality of some of our wines, and thus move our tasting fee up to $20.

This makes our next tasting July 14, 2011 ... which is also Bastille Day. We celebrated last year with French wines, and will do so again this year, taking a petite tour de France. I hope you'll join us then.

Look for an invite and RSVP request to go out a couple weeks ahead of time. We'd love to have a turn out of 15-20 folks, so please put the event on your calendar.

Good health and happy grape exploration to all.

Cheers,

Ryan

BaroloGreetings!

Our next Century Club tasting is scheduled for Thursday, May 19 at 6:30pm.

2009 Malvira Roero Arneis DOCG
2008 Oddero Dolcetto d'Alba

Look forward to seeing you at the Hop & Vine on Thursday. Tastings + snacks are $15 per person, and if you need a passport those are a one-time $5.

I'll have stamps for the last few meetings ready for everyone, so it'll be a big sticker day as well!

Cheers!

Sipping Through the Garden of France

posted Apr 29, 2011 8:53 PM by Ryan Reichert

This coming Thursday (May 5) we're going to be journeying to one of France's most gorgeous regions, the Loire Valley (by popular demand!).

Home of what is believed to be the purest form of the French language, the Loire is also packed with castles and bounties of agricultural wonders—hence it's nickname, Le Jardin de la France. Having spent a semester in Angers, I can tell you from personal experience that this is truly an amazing region with lots to offer ... not to mention incredible, food-friendly wines!

We'll be sampling five wines at The Hop & Vine, starting at 6:30. Here is the line up:
  • 2008 Domaine de la Grenaudiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine
  • 2009 Paul et Jean-Marc Pastou Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 2009 Domaine Claud Lafon "Le Grand Piece" Reuilly Rose (Pinot Gris)
  • 2008 Domaine de la Noiraie "Les 7 L-D" Red (Cabernet Franc)
  • 2005 Domaine de Quarres Coteaux du Layon Rablay "Magdelaine" (Botrytis Chenin Blanc)
I hope you'll be able to join us for this tasting. Don't forget to bring your passports, and we'll supply the vino, cheese, and baguette (and other nibbles). As always, the tasting will cost $15, and for new members you can pick up your own passport for just five bucks.

And yes, it is Cinco de Mayo on Thursday, but Yetta has got a huge selection of incredible beers in the bottle shop as well; be sure to check them out and take a bottle home!

Italy 1.0

posted Jan 25, 2011 2:30 PM by Ryan Reichert   [ updated Jan 27, 2011 1:32 PM ]

Greetings Century Sippers!

For our next three tastings we're going to be diving into Italian wines. Based on group interest (and honestly too many grapes than anyone could feasibly account for tasting) we're going to spend a good deal of time really dissecting some differentItalian regions. There are 20 autonomous wine regions in all!

We'll be meeting at the Hop & Vine as usual, and each tasting is just $15 for 6 wines + nibbles. Here are the grapes we'll cover:
  • Pinot Grigio
  • Verdicchio
  • Vermentino
  • Bombino Bianco
  • Gewurztraminer
  • Garganega
Make sure you remember to bring your Grape Passports, and feel free to bring friends that would like to join us.

New members are asked to contribute $5 per passport to cover printing costs.

Look forward to seeing you all.

Cheers,

Ryan

Hungarian Wines

posted Jan 12, 2011 9:09 PM by Ryan Reichert

Coincidentally Hungary has just recently taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union. We're going to celebrate then with four excellent Hungarian wines.
  • Kiralyudvar Furmint Sec
  • Oremus 3 Puttonyos
  • Oremus 5 Puttonyos
  • Oremus Furmint Noble, Late Harvest
All four wines are produced using the variety furmint, so we'll only be covering one grape this week. However we've got lots in store for the months ahead given what you've asked us to feature at Century Club.

Hope you'll join us Thursday evening (1/13/2011) at 6:30pm at The Hop & Vine. Bring your passport and friends who would like to join Century Club.

Cheers!
